Bass Proshop started on a simple premise. They saw a need in the fishing market, and decided that if no one else was going to satisfy this need, well, heck, they sure would do it. More than 30 years later, the business is an empire. Its stores are across the country. Its products are used in streams, lakes, and oceans across the world. And it’s logo is practically as household as the golden arches or the red can of cola.

But back in 1971, no such business existed. The world’s best fishermen were left to scrape together gear. In many cases, they were forced to compete with a motley mix of subpar gear. Their choices for rods, reels, and tackle were just not consistent, nor were they specialized enough to match their top-notch skills. Then came Bass. Started in Springfield, Missouri in a store that could hardly be called that—it had just eight feet of space to it—Bass Proshop began. Their first set of wares included equipment that would find on the tournament circuit that year.

Talking about fishing tackle, you should have a good heart to heart with the fish you’re looking to reel in. Ask them about their lifestyle, where they’re from, what kind of diet they’re into, and other aspects of their daily life. Of course, we aren’t talking literally having this conversation! You can find out all of this crucial information without even phoning a fish.

Why are all these questions important? You won’t have any success at fishing unless you know what kind of prey you’re hunting, and know what kind of equipment you need to catch them. You see, fishing gear is very specific to the type of fish it’s meant to capture.
