The finder sends out electronic pulses to its transducer mechanism, which then shoots the pulse into the water. The pulse continues to travel until it is deflected back by the floor of the water body. Most other objects, such as fish, jellyfish, or other creatures, the beam passes right through.

The fly fisherman needs tools like pliers and nippers, polarized sunglasses with brown or yellow lenses, special hats and layered clothing.
